Reminder-I am not in Oxford

By Saman Hashmi

These days what I hear frequently are discussions amongst Kurians about the scope of their fields, and if their degree will be able to satisfy the requirements for a good job. Despite being a renowned government university, its students battle a serious case of inferiority complex. One reason for this may be that people from other institutes often discriminate the students of University of Karachi brutally, and don’t think that they have much aptitude for competitive fields.  Students are badly discouraged and start doubting their capacities and capabilities, and themselves consider to be less than students from other institutes or universities.

But I am not the one, who will criticize those who doubt the skills of our university students. Because I think if majority believes that Kurians can’t do well, then there must be good reason behind it.

Let’s make a few quick observations before jumping into the competition for dirty laundry. Take the example of our own Mass Communication department. Do you really think that our university graduates have more command over their field than a journalist from LUMS? Of course not! We don’t know the ‘J’ of journalism until we are in our 3rd year. In our 4th semester we are doing our first writing assignment. On the other hand, a student studying in LUMS starts practical work from his first semester. That’s the difference! And same things happen in every field. As students of a government university we are not even provided basic academic facilities as in other private institutes.

You may think, I am one of those people who criticize Karachi University in every other discussion. Absolutely not! I am a Kurian and proud to be a part of it. The reason behind this article is that we should stop criticizing others, as this is not a solution to any problem. If you really want to prove people out there wrong then take a step, start focusing on your goal and stop paying heed to what others say. If you can’t then unfortunately you will develop an inferiority complex and that will overshadow your capacities. In case, you believe that you are more capable than an average Kurian and this place is not the right place for you to bring out your true talent, then I better suggest you shouldn’t have opted for this university, in the first place. Maybe, this institute is not your best bet to nourish the Bill Gates in you.

P.S: Honest and free advice to all- before and after getting enrolled in Karachi University remind yourself as many times as you can “I’m opting/ have opted for Karachi University, not for the Oxford.”

  3. very well written and you have highlighted a big issue... I think its more about being in a state of complex though I am not saying that we are satisfied with the education that has been provided to us in last three semesters. My cuzn is in Iqra university in the same semester as us but I am afraid to say we are far behind.

  11. This is a current LUMS student here... and I follow your blog on insistence of one of the contributors who happens to be an old friend...

Anyways, first of all, there is no degree for journalism at LUMS... let us be very clear on that...

Second, I get your point and building up on that, let me assure you that its only the experience that grooms Luminites to what we are... Luminites also face problems in finding jobs but these are because they're adamant on finding the right one... Many seniors have actually spoilt their chances of a bright professional career by not availing the available opportunity...

Last, we are not super human beings... Its a false claim that we get on with the practical work right from the start... It is a student's decision not a university imposed policy... the reason Luminites (albeit all of them most of the time) get the jobs is that we get good recommendations from a world class faculty who are active in research and care enough to cash their contacts for students... and because its a few hundreds that graduate, not thousands like in KU... Therefore, I'd rather ask Kurians (as you call it, peculiar as it may sound) to stop thinking its their bad because its not...

Please enjoy your studies as you enjoy your daily dose of gossip and you'll witness the difference...

Thank you for your patience but I felt like writing... So, peace! :D

  13. to all those who think we better off not compare,
i reckon if v dun even compare, we won't be standing anywhere.. itz competition that makes one strive for more and more.

  14. @Sarah Alam:
You make a very foolish argument (the first part of your statement) coupled with the most sensible claim one could have come across (the last part)...

I believe you should stress on rising to the occasion, the competition... rather than wasting your time comparing yourself to others which should not and would not help in any case...

@ Huvaida, Kanwal Zehra, Ifrah Ali Khan, Fatima, Hadia, Farah... Thanx!

@ Bilal Usman Khan... Yep you are right that we should start competition but I have seen number of such KUrian that discouraged and underestimated by others in practical field just bcoz of the "KU SYMBOL"! But definitely as u said we should do the Competition instead of Comparing...
Thank you for your precious comment and suggestion :)

@Sarah Alam... Somehow i am agree! bcoz sometimes comparison creates competition.

    THANKS TO AWL :)

  17. @ Bilal Aftab Usman:
speaking of blogging ethics, have u ever followed the rules urself? u jus mentioned my comment to be a "foolish argument".. in tht case i think itz like squandering one's time to respond somebody who jus did a personal attack instead of substantiating their point and surprisingly enuf when itz not their blog post..

  18. 'i reckon if v dun even compare, we won't be standing anywhere...'

better you kill yourself than give this argument... why compare... this comparison is what will eventually lead you to insanity of sorts in the future... all this just because i called your argument a foolish one (which btw it was)...
