Compulsories Crap

By Shumaila Rais

“Compulsories”. Whenever this word comes to mind, I suddenly start thinking about countless chromosomes, DNA and Math’s Xwhich is never found. From last two years we are studying many unnecessary things in the name of “compulsory subjects”. Along with our necessary subjects there is a rule that a science student will study arts subjects like Sociology, Economics etc and an Arts student studies science subjects like Mathematics, Computers, Science etc.

I did not get the reason behind this concept of studying compulsory subjects. I am student of journalism and all my subjects must be related to journalism like news writing, news composing, editing, or media studies. Then why am I studying Mathematics and Everyday Science? Will these chromosomes, DNA and finding an ‘X’ help in our field?  On the other hand these subjects are very tough for students studying Arts. Those students who did their matric/intermediate from Arts face horrible problems in studying science sometimes. These subjects become a reason for bad marks and grades because average students can’t understand science.

KU should teach subjects according to students' selected fields because a student wants to take command over their selected fields. At the same time every subject is charged for its exam. Then what’s the point of spending money on these useless subjects? Till now, we have had to study eight unnecessary subjects in the name of Compulsories. Think for yourself what helps more, to a journalist, science and computers or journalism techniques?  Think about it!

  4. as much as it pisses me off as well, i think its for our own good... college is there for the transition from a student to a professional... you come across all sorts of people and this is precisely the reason for this diversity...

and your opinion actually does not give you a right to call these subjects 'useless'... nothing is useless...

adding to that i would point that you chose journalism as your major... you, dear, will come across just about EVERYTHING that is out there... knowing the basics of some of these shouldn't hurt coz later you will be researching for the report you will be writing on this new scientific breakthrough of this nerd in the biochem lab or this mathematics professor who became a media darling world over by finally proving that impossible conjecture... tell me what are you gonna do at that time... curse yourself on choosing journalism... i dont think so!

  5. and math is the best major of all... the career prospects of math majors are virtually unlimited... you should not hate maths... its the most complete science... actually the basis of all...

it also depends on the teachers you've had throughout your life that spark interest... perhaps you never had a good math teacher which might be the reason for this repugnance ...

  6. This topic has been selected by many other students too... come on computer and everyday sciences' exam we have passed out so stop cursing it... And I agree with the above that "Maths is the best major of all"....

When you will work as a professional and you come across news about latest technology there these basics of computer which u have learnt will help u out similarly when u will have to work on the news related to medical sector or any advancement in the field of medical sciences, these basics which u have studied earlier will help you out...

our course planners are not stupid who included these subjects to make us understand this versatility... so take it positively and enjoy the variety of disciplines...
