Water trouble

By Shumaila Rais

I want to share a an interesting experience of mine with you.

One day our chair person, Rafia Taj, came and asked me, “Shumaila department mai Pani araha hai k nai?”  I was very surprised to find out that the chair person knew my name. I was confused. “Ji ma’am araha hai”, I answered in total bewilderment.
Actually this “pani scene” was a big fat joke amongst us friends. I could not understand how the chair person got to know about a joke that we shared, and to come out and ask me about it!. Let me share the pani scene with you guys.
There was shortage of water in the department and weather was very hot as well. We could not buy water bottles everyday because it gets expensive. We were thirsty, frustrated, and angry. So we went and nagged the "chamcha" of Rafia Taj, as we like to call him. Initially I went and told him that there was no water and he should something about it. I went again. He listened patiently. Then afterwards one by one every one of my friends went up and told the same thing till thhe man started shouting, "Mujhay pata hay pani nahi aaraha hay! Humayn bhi paani chahiyay hota hay! Nahi pata kab ayega pani! Mayn koi pani wala thori hoon!". There was still no water but we had managed to state our case, get rid of our frustration, and make that man go crazy which was the most pleasurable thing out of the whole situation which made us laugh till our stomachs hurt.
After a few days when the water problem was solved, the spoon-man came and said, “ab app ye nai bataeyay ga k aj pani araha hai”.

I have nothing to write, but I have to!

By Shumaila Rais

My blog-fellows covered almost all the good topics. Therefore, I don’t have any good ones to write on. But as this blog is a part of an assignment, I have to write and email something when my turn comes, to my group leader.

According to our Ma’am, writing is not a big deal. Whenever any of us talk about it or ask about a topic to write on, she says, “Blog likhna koi mushkil nahi hai, sirf teen paragraphs likhne hote hain sirf teen paragraphs, kuch bhi likhdo bhai”. Once she said, “Why isn't anyone not writing an article on this stupid sentence?? (That was written on the gate of class room),  and recently, my class fellow failed to submit his article. Then she said to him “why are you not writing on this tea bag?? (Which was lying on the floor of department but it was not inside or nor outside? )."

Writing is not so difficult but writing on a specific topic is an ordeal for me. Perhaps I am not used to  it. The most difficult thing is to decide and interesting topic to blab on. Well, Ma’am Sadia Mehmood is a teacher and for me she is a good one, but writing on anything is easy for her say,  but its not that easy for us students. Even many good students are now sick of this blog writing. But I am dead sure about that fact that these writings will definitely help us in our professional life. With that hope it will be my second last article after that I have to write just one more. So I have start thinking about the topic for last one.

I am not in the mood to write anything more so I think I should finish this article. And I know most of you, or perhaps all of you won’t like it but as I mentioned earlier I have to write because it’s the only matter of marks for us!!

Compulsories Crap

By Shumaila Rais

“Compulsories”. Whenever this word comes to mind, I suddenly start thinking about countless chromosomes, DNA and Math’s Xwhich is never found. From last two years we are studying many unnecessary things in the name of “compulsory subjects”. Along with our necessary subjects there is a rule that a science student will study arts subjects like Sociology, Economics etc and an Arts student studies science subjects like Mathematics, Computers, Science etc.

I did not get the reason behind this concept of studying compulsory subjects. I am student of journalism and all my subjects must be related to journalism like news writing, news composing, editing, or media studies. Then why am I studying Mathematics and Everyday Science? Will these chromosomes, DNA and finding an ‘X’ help in our field?  On the other hand these subjects are very tough for students studying Arts. Those students who did their matric/intermediate from Arts face horrible problems in studying science sometimes. These subjects become a reason for bad marks and grades because average students can’t understand science.

KU should teach subjects according to students' selected fields because a student wants to take command over their selected fields. At the same time every subject is charged for its exam. Then what’s the point of spending money on these useless subjects? Till now, we have had to study eight unnecessary subjects in the name of Compulsories. Think for yourself what helps more, to a journalist, science and computers or journalism techniques?  Think about it!

Khokha addiction

By Shumaila Rais

The university Khokha is located under the shelter of a Neem tree, and is near to many departments, including Pharmacy, Chemistry, Statistics, UBIT and also our very own Mass Communication. It’s a hot spot for smokers. It is also near the Pharmacy canteen, which means it is never deserted. Those who are addicted to betel nuts, toffees, and other things, so called chooran chutnyan, can’t stop themselves go over there and buy different things.

When I was new to university life, I considered Khokha to be the only place for smokers! I was scared to go over there. But with time I experienced, it is not such bad place as I thought even though it sells things potentially harmful to health. But everyone is responsible for him/herself.

Owner of the Khokha is very ‘khurrant’.  He always has head phones in his ears with the FM radio from his mobile phone in his ears all day. I go over there to buy Tara, GoGo, Tulsi, 7UP, Meto, HUM TUM, DIL LAGI, SHAHI MEWA, GOLDEN, TASTY, AAS PAS, JUGNO, and most importantly, my fix of chooran chutny of the day!

Love of food...

By Shumaila Rais

Karachi University is one of the leading universities in Pakistan, where many students successfully find their life partners and darlings. So, for them, there must be a place where these sweet couples can decide to meet (pyar kiya tou darna kya).

Hence, we have Prem Gali-in short, PG. I go there a lot,no not for dating, but for eating, since the place is actually a collection of shops of food items, at very reasonable prices.

To be honest, I never found any decent date or a couple there. Despite the 'loving' name, PG is a bad place to date because you are bound to find someone from your class having a glass of fresh juice or a bun-kebab. Old college friends, or any cousin who were also studying in the university will destroy all the fun by asking their pathetic, stupid and idiotic questions.
"Who is he? Only friend ya phir...? Cousin tou nahi lagra yar!"

For the lovers there are plenty of other places likeValika ground, the front of Pharmacy department, but for food lovers in KU, PG is their only solace.

Talk/date in peace...

By Shumaila Rais Uddin

Ideally, libraries are supposed to be a place for studying in peace, undisturebed. But, the libraries of our dear university, seem to have been built for just the opposite...

Now KU libraries, are used as an open chat room or areas for heated discussions. Whenever students get exhausted and from their excessive "faraghat", the only place which comes in their mind for relaxation and loosening up a bit are libraries. While some of students use libraries for sleeping as well, with their eyes wide open. The reason? Libraries have air-conditioning.

According to hypothetical rules, students are never allow to chit chat in the libraries, but almost all of them still do. If they are not talking they are texting. If not texting, then sleeping, and if not sleeping then dating. God's custodians seldom look into the library, so its a relatively safer place to be able to date in peace.

You get the point?

By Shumaila Rais

"Sunooo...yar mere liye seat rakhna please"

This is the mostly used sentence by me and most of KUrians using KU points for transport; I am kinda use to of this sentence during the way from home to university and university to home in my point. Everybody seems in a hurry to get a seat in the point. Traveling in KU points is a very adventurous, humorous and courageous part of university life.
Everyone starts texting others to confirm its timing or whether it is coming or not. Mostly students use KU points because it is really cheaper and somehow easiest way to reach home but on the same time it is thrilling experience.

The points are fully over loaded by KUrians so that not even a single student can take a single step. Many students are take risk and agree to stand on the last step of point that causes many serious accidents.

Students are not even properly settled at their places and then suddenly conductor comes and asks about the fare or ticket of point. And the very most interesting place in points is the back benches area, where the standing boys are full enthusiastic and wants to fall down on their desire beautiful girl. I want to mention these boys, actually they are gillgiti Pathan. Some boys start singing stupid and unmelodious songs by their intolerable voice and make the journey a big head ache for others.

I see many of girls fighting with each other to get their seats or a proper and desirable place (nearest to window) to stand at least. While some bad boys never pay their fare of point.

Traveling in points in risky, dangerous and annoying too but in the same time it is part of university life and every Kurian should try atleast once in his/her university life, But in a safe manner.
